What Is Drone Videography? Uses and NZ Rules
Drone videography is filming from the air with a remotely piloted camera. It shows scale, place and movement in a way ground footage cannot.
What it is used for
- Opening shots that set the scene
- Property, tourism and real estate
- Construction progress and scale
- Events and outdoor activations
- Music videos and film
The rules in New Zealand
Drones are governed by Civil Aviation Authority rules, mainly Part 101 for most flights and Part 102 for operations outside it. In general that means flying below 120 metres, keeping the drone in sight, keeping clear of aerodromes and getting consent before flying over people or property. Check aviation.govt.nz for the current rules before any shoot.
Making it look right
Aerial footage should be planned with the rest of the film and graded to match it, so it cuts in naturally instead of looking like stock.
Questions
Do you need permission to fly a drone over people in NZ?
Generally yes. CAA rules require consent from people and property owners you fly over. Check aviation.govt.nz for details.
